Evans Still Sits After Week of Rest

Even though he said his injured left ankle is feeling better, wideout Lee Evans continued to rest it by sitting out Wednesday’s practice.

As such, Evans said he’s uncertain if he would suit up this weekend against the New York Jets.

“It feels better now, but you can’t say it’s all the way back,” said Evans. “We’re still going to take it one day at a time and be smart heading through this week and heading into the bye week. It’s not all my decision.

“Obviously, we’re just trying to do what’s best all the way around. Right now, it does feel better, having a little rest on it. It’s progress.”

With Evans inactive last Sunday against the St. Louis Rams because of the ankle, the Ravens got a burst of production out of rookie speedster Torrey Smith, who caught three touchdown passes.

Meanwhile, safety Haruki Nakamura, who sustained a posterior cruciate ligament injury in the Rams game, is hoping to get back on the field sooner than the Ravens initially anticipated.

Nakamura is targeting a Week 6 matchup with the Houston Texans as his return date, but Head Coach John Harbaugh thinks it will be about a month.

“I’ve already made a ton of progress and they know I’m going to make a lot of progress because they know I’m a hard worker and I’m not going to be just sitting around trying to let it heal by itself,” said Nakamura. “I’m going to do everything I can. As of right now, we’re kind of scheduling for me to come back right after the bye week. The next day I really didn’t have too much swelling. It was really just a stability thing.”

In addition to Evans and Nakamura, six more Ravens did not practice, including center Matt Birk (knee), linebacker Dannell Ellerbe (thigh), guard Ben Grubbs (toe), defensive end Cory Redding (toe), wideout David Reed (shoulder) and cornerback Jimmy Smith.

Harbaugh said that the fact that the bye week is upon the Ravens will play a role in the decision to play a player who might not be at full strength on Sunday.

“If you feel like they can’t be 100 percent in this game and if you have another answer in there, that’s a consideration,” said Harbaugh. “It will just depend, as the week goes on, again, how close they are to being 100 percent. But, I think the extra week of rest after this week is a factor.”
